Understanding your water, in plain language

A few explainers on the topics that come up most often when neighbors reach out to us.

Why is Milton's water source considered so good?

Milton buys 100% of its water from the MWRA's Quabbin and Wachusett Reservoirs — large, sparsely developed surface reservoirs with strict watershed land-use protections that keep contamination sources far from the water itself. Most drinking-water problems start with a compromised or vulnerable source; Milton's source is about as protected as it gets in the Northeast.

How to read your water quality letter

Milton households receive an annual MWRA community letter rather than a utility-specific CCR, since Milton doesn't treat its own water. It lists every contaminant tested for, the detected range, and the legal limit. Watch for the difference between a primary standard (MCL, health-based and enforceable) and a secondary standard (SMCL, aesthetic and non-enforceable).

Lead service lines

Lead in tap water almost always comes from a home's plumbing or service line, not the source reservoir. If your property's service line is listed as lead or "unknown" in the Town's inventory, you're eligible for a free replacement under Milton's active 2026 program — check the Town's interactive map to see your own status.

Should you filter your water?

Milton's regional source water tests clean on the measures that matter most, so filtration here is less about correcting a known problem and more about an extra layer of certainty — especially useful if your service line's material is still listed as "unknown" in the Town's inventory, or while the 2026 replacement program is still underway on your street. A few reasonable options, matched to what's actually relevant given Milton's own data:

Activated carbon filtration

Effective against chlorine taste and odor and some PFAS compounds, depending on the specific carbon media and contact time. Common in pitcher filters, faucet-mount units, and whole-house systems — a reasonable baseline given Milton's already-clean source water.

NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 certified lead filters

If your service line is listed as lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement, or unknown, look for a filter independently certified for lead reduction specifically (NSF/ANSI Standard 53), rather than taking a manufacturer's general "removes contaminants" claim at face value — useful in the window before your line is replaced.

Reverse osmosis

The most thorough household option for a broad range of dissolved contaminants, typically installed under a kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water. Given Milton's genuinely clean regional PFAS results, this is more of a belt-and-suspenders choice here than a response to any known local exceedance.
